May 3, 2025, 2:00 pm: The Ear of the Whale at the Modern

In conjunction with the special exhibition Alex Da Corte: The Whale, Sounds Modern presents a concert of music that refers directly to popular and historical works. Like the ephemeral source materials referenced in Da Corte’s paintings, these compositions make evident how the things we identify with — or use to define us — evolve over time.

The program includes works by Mauricio Kagel, Matthew Shlomowitz, Zack Browning, Melissa Dunphy, and Alex Hills. Performers include Kathleen Crabtree and Mia Detwiler, violin; Daphne Gerling, viola; Stephen Lucas, keyboards; Elizabeth McNutt, flute; Kourtney Newton, cello; and Patrick Overturf, percussion.

The event starts at 2:00 pm CST on Saturday, May 3, 2025, in the auditorium of the Modern, 3200 Darnell Street, Fort Worth, TX 76107. Admission is free and open to the public; the performance will also be live streamed on the Modern’s YouTube page. Complete program information and a direct live stream link will be coming soon!
