In conjunction with Rashid Johnson’s exhibition A Poem for Deep Thinkers, Sounds Modern presents a concert of music inspired by Johnson’s conceptualism and Chicago roots. Informed by The Freedom Principle: Experiments in Art and Music to Now by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, we’re featuring works from Chicago based composer-improvisers George Lewis and Jlin (Jerrilyn Patton), as well as a work by Tyshawn Sorey dedicated to his friend and mentor Muhal Richard Abrams, a leading figure in the Association for the Advancement of Creative Music. Flutist and Sounds Modern director Elizabeth McNutt will be joined by violinist Mia Detwiler, cellist Kourtney Newton, bassist Kory Reeder, electronic musician Stephen Lucas, and percussionists Hunter Gross, Patrick Overturf, Jonah Payne, and Chris Trlak.
