Sounds Modern celebrates the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth’s Women Painting Women exhibition with a program of works in which women composers explore deeply personal connections. Inspired by images from real life – travel itineraries, comic strips, mirrors, a birthday, a moment of suppressed fury, an inward struggle to process grief, a young student’s trauma – each composer creates an imaginative, emotional, and deeply personal response in music. This concert of chamber works for voices, woodwinds, strings, and electronics will feature composers Kate Soper, Cathy Berberian, Shelley Washington, Elizabeth Brown, Angélica Negrón, Sky Macklay, and Kaija Saariaho.
The event starts at 2:00 pm CST on September 3, 2022, in the auditorium of the Modern (3200 Darnell Street, Fort Worth, TX 76107). Performances will be given by vocalists Sarah Ruth Alexander and Morgan Hornung, flutists Elizabeth McNutt and Brittney Balkcom, violinist Mia Detwiler, violist Kathleen Crabtree, cellist Kourtney Newton, and clarinetist Alex Ravitz, with Andrew May running electronics. Admission is free and open to the public. The concert will also be live streamed at the Museum’s Sounds Modern YouTube channel, where you can also find other recent performances.
