May 2, 2009: Andrew May’s Recyclers at the Modern

On Saturday, May 2 at 2:00 pm, the lobby of the Modern will be filled with mockingbirds and other expert recyclers of sound. Andrew May’s new work Recyclers is based on sounds of a northern mockingbird recorded at Big Bend National Park, and invites twelve human performers – flutist Elizabeth McNutt and members of her Nova Ensemble at UNT – to participate in a half-human, half-avian conversation. Electronic sounds and live performers will be distributed throughout the balconies of the Modern lobby, as if they were concrete and glass trees in this hybrid interior-exterior sonic landscape. Admission is free and open to the public (museum admission is separate).
